Understanding database management

In simple words, database management is the process of managing data in a data base. It is usually done by the data base management system usually referred to as the DBMS. This software has the tools and utilities to interact with the database easily.

This tool is used by the database administrators for managing the database. There are many tasks associated with data base management. Usually the Structured Query Language (SQL) is used to manage the database.

User requests are managed by the DBMS to allow which users to access the database. This can be configured by the database administrator. The integrity of the data is ensured by the DBMS. Only users with the required privilege can perform certain task on the database like creating or altering the existing tables or inserting or editing data in the database. These privileges are managed by the database administrator for each user in the network.

The database administrator plays a very important role in the data base management. The administrator has the rights to alter any table or create a new database or create a table in the database. Administration rights are available for the administrator and it is possible to create another user with the administration privileges if necessary.

Normalization of the tables, removing duplicate data from the existing tables, indexing certain columns so that the search performed on the tables would be faster, can be done by the administrator.

It is important to take back up of data in the data base on a regular basis. In case of database crash, the backup data can be restored so that the downtime of the system is minimal. Automatic backup of data can be scheduled by the administrator so that backup is taken at a pre-defined time regularly. The backup data can be in other servers, or in a removable media like DVDs or CDs.
