Preferred storage device for life cycle data management

Not all data are active and important in an organization. Data which are important at some point might not be so important at another point of time. The importance of data lies in the phase in which it is. In the life cycle of data it undergoes different phases. Similarly, there are different storage available for data in different phases.

The storage in hard disk is expensive when compared to storage in optical discs and magnetic tape. Moreover the data can be retrieved faster if it is in hard disk and it is slower when it is retrieved from a magnetic tape.

When storing data in different storage, you can store more data than the capacity of the hard disk in your organization.

This type of storage is referred to as tiered storage of data or hierarchical storage management. Data which are active in the life cycle of data are stored in the hard disk, whereas data which are outdated and old are stored in the slower devices like optical discs and magnetic tape. Although it is efficient to store all the data in a hard disk, not all the organizations can afford it.

In the life cycle data management the policies related to data management play an important role. It is necessary to classify the data in your organization according to the importance of data with respect to your business. You should be aware which data should be stored online and which one should be offline.

With such classifications you can decide where it should be stored, whether in the hard disk or optical disk or magnetic tape. If this process can be automated it shows the efficiency of managing data in your organization. The level of automation achieved for this process is directly proportional to the efficiency of the data management process.
