When to go for a distributed database management system

A distributed database management system for a business that has global businesses with office spread over the entire globe. If they are working on a single application and if there is a need for different databases across the globe to increase the efficiency of the application through faster data loading, then you can go for a distributed database management system.

Consider a scenario that a company has head office in New York and branches at London and Hong Kong. It is not necessary that the personnel working from Hong Kong should access the same database that is available in the New York server.

The time taken to load the data from this server to the system in Hong Kong would increase drastically and it depends on the network traffic. Say, if they have a database copy at Hong Kong itself, then the speed of accessing the data would be more than from the New York server. This is the underlying concept of distributed database management system.

The databases are spread over the globe and by using the distributed database management system; all these databases are synchronized immediately so that the change affected in a database is reflected in all the other databases within a short span of time.

All the insertions, updations, and the deletions done on a single database should be reflected to all the other databases. This task of synchronizing the changes and routing the calls to the database to the appropriate database is done by the distributed database management system.

With the distributed database management system in place, the administrator of the databases can work from his system and access all the other databases as if they are all available in his system. This is one advantage of having a distributed database management system which is in fact a very essential one for the database administrator.
