Understanding system management facility

System management facility is a component provided by IBM that is found in the IBM’s operating system z/OS which is used in the mainframe computers. Many activities will be going on in the mainframe computer and these activities are recorded by the system management facility component. The data is recorded in a file.

Different types of information are recorded about the Mainframe computer. Some of them include input / output data, network activity, usage of software in the mainframe, conditions that induce an error in the system, and how the CPU is utilized. This file helps you to analyze the performance of the mainframe system and also helps you in managing the mainframe system.

 

There another component called the Resource Measurement Facility found in the mainframe system that uses the system management facility. The resource management facility provided you information about the amount of disk space used, the cache used, and the load on the computer, the virtual storage level available and details of the memory used.

 

Details of the processor and the coupling facility are also provided by the resource measurement facility. All this is possible due to the use of the system management facility component. Alternatives to the system management facility are also provided by other vendors like BMC for which you have to shed some extra dollars.

 

The records created by the system management facility are numbered. The amount of data that is collected by the system management facility is controlled by the operators. Records created by other software apart from system management facility would be having a different numbering pattern. Record types for DB2, CICS, and Websphere MQ would vary when compared to the one created by the system management facility. A system management facility dump utility is available that would dump the files created by the system management facility, periodically.
