Understanding Holographic Data Storage

Computer users, from 1980 onwards use CDs to store multiple megabytes of information in to a disc with 12 cm diameter. DVDs came in to prominence around 1997 {digital versatile disc} which made it possible to store an entire movie in a single disc.

Many of the needs of the users are successfully met by CDs and DVDs- like storing a collection of music, movies, videos and other data requiring a large amount of space. Scientists have, now, developed the latest optical storage medium called holographic data storage to enhance storage capabilities and keep pace with the consumers’ demands.

While CDs, DVDs and other magnetic storage devices storing information directly on the surface of the recording medium, holographic data storage goes beneath the surface of the medium using the full depth of a recording media for storage. So instead of storing one data bit at a time, holographic data storage allows your computer to write and read a million bits of data with just one flash of light. As a result faster transfer rate is effected compared to other optical storages.

Thus holographic data storage brings a faster rate of transfer. It is a compelling alternative for storage because of its high storage density, durability, reliability and affordability. Its technical flexibility can be used in other products from consumer portable devices to information storage for business. On account of this you can own a credit card with 20 gigabytes [GB} of storage or a single disc with 300 GB in future.

Computer Storage
Markets will soon have Holographic desk top storage system(HDSS} soon after 30 years of research. The HDSS will provide tetra byte of storage at a 1 GB transfer rate instead of 120 GB and 40 megabytes/second transfer. In 30 seconds an entire movie can be transferred on to a disc.

This technology, not yet released due to some problems, may be launched within five years. Five years is a long period for wait but it is worth the wait. Future disc will be 28 times larger than the capacity of the DVDs of today.
