Creating a document management system and implementing it in any organization should have some set of standards that should be followed. The document management standards that are to be followed will vary depending upon the region and the country. The legislation, the laws, and the regulations that are followed by the Government of that country in which you want to implement the document management system are important.


Every country will have its own legislation regarding the document management standards to be followed. There are National Archives to guide regarding the standards in British Commonwealth and Europe. Using these guidelines for the document management standards you can develop your document management application. This concept that is followed mostly in the United Kingdom guides the companies regarding the requirements for electronic recordkeeping and IT processes. A three level of object hierarchy is followed by the DOMEA concept.

 

The European Union follows standards legislation, which can found at http://ec.europa.eu. You will find information based on the industry in which you are. Many of the local standards are now replaced by MoReQ2, details of which can be found at www.moreq2.eu.

 

ISO standards like ISO 2709:1996, ISO 15836:2003, ISO 21127:2006, ISO 23950:1998, and ISO/CD 10244 are followed in document management systems. These standards are for information exchange, metadata element set, information retrieval, and business process / workflow.
