Knowing the Different Types of Data Storage Systems

Though every computer and server store data, they cannot be considered as data storage systems. Only those systems that store data for used in retrieving and restoring files after some kind of computer disaster can be called as data storage systems. Those systems can be onsite, near by or at a remote location. There are a variety of models and media, specifically designed, and permitting a system to meet the needs of a particular company.

Media and Models

Medium to large companies have different models of data storage systems reserved for them. Large companies, data driven, need reliable storage and a way to recreate files quickly. The proximity of the stored data is based on the type of disaster foreseen. A company in a country prone to earthquake will be foolish to back up onsite computers with on site servers. It is better for them to have their won servers at some distance or outsource their data storage system needs.

Wall Street companies, for instance, keep mirror facilities out of state complete with desks, phones and data copies to avoid damage caused by terror attacks for more than a few hours. The model of data storage systems include full back up with incrementals, of all the files stored in a safe place. The incrementals are copies of changes from the original back up at regular intervals. For rebuilding the files, the full back up is copies book on the computer system together with all the incrementals.

One of the better storage systems is the fullback up with differentials. It is compared to the current bills and only the differences are copied. Other storage systems can remain connected to the computer network and record all activity. Media for data storage systems is always the magnetic tape. It is the best for bulk storage, reliability, capacity and price. Modern hard disks are easy for use, available quickly. Optical discs like CD’s and DVD’s are good for storing different data systems. Instead of company based back up many corporations out source their data storage systems. They can upload their files over a LAN or the internet and recreate them in the same way.
